Although motor learning is about engaging in the doing of the skill, an element in the process requires dancers to mentally process the input (Kimmerle & Côté-Laurence, 2003). While this usually happens as dancers attempt to physically describe the movement that they have been taught (input-processing-output), the learning value could presumably be improved by considering visualisation, a psychological tool frequently recommended to enhance and consolidate physical practice (Haas, 2010; see chapter 8). The end of the session, as dancers move into cool-down activities following the taught elements, might be a good time to reflect on the activities worked on earlier, imprinting both the material and the results and getting them ready for continued work in the next class or rehearsal. Perhaps the final repetition of the last sequence could be a mental practice version to help reduce tension. Chapter 3 contains more detailed information about specific activities to include in physiological cool-down.
